What are the roles and responsibilities in professional theatre?
well, excluding actors, have:
wardrobe, include costume designer (for designing costumes), wardrobe mistress/master/manager (the manager of wardrobe department, responsible budgets, etc), assistant make , mend costumes, , dresser, attend performances , problems during show. depending on theatre, team larger. theatres have dedicated make-up artist(s).
stage management, include company stage manager (in overall charge of team , may in charge of several shows @ once), stage manager (in overall charge of a/the show, writes show reports, etc), deputy stage manager (calls show - i.e. on cans or headphones, speaking technical crew during show , telling them , when), assistant stage manager (normally helping props , actors , might double actor in small parts themselves). again, depends on size of company , how many shows in production how many of these might have.
technical crew, including lighting designer, lighting operator(s) (including spotlight operators), scenery designer (for designing shows, how look, scenery like, etc), sound operator(s), fly crew (for lowering , raising sets , scenery flies - i.e. large space above stage), scene shifters (for moving scenery , props on , off stage left or right during show).
production manager - in overall charge of backstage team, managing budget entire show, liaising other departments ensure equipment available, budgets kept to, hires arranged, problems dealt in advance, etc.
marketing team (speaks itself), typically marketing manager , assistant. education officer (not every theatre have one, if have community remit, might required). there may marketing designer programmes , posters, though outsourced.
front of house team (for looking after patrons during show, selling programmes, seating, safety, etc), front of house manager. work sm team on health , safety issues also.
there may resident group of musicians, , if so, musical director (md) also.
artistic director (usually in charge of whole theatre, productions do, how money spent, how plan season, etc). ad may have assistant. there may separate financial director. there may theatre owner takes active interest.
casting director (unusual, one, or @ least part-time 1 assist artistic director).
box office staff. office staff (such pa ad). cleaners. large theatre may have own fire or safety marshall. stage door staff.
directors (an ad won't direct every show, , directors hired on freelance basis). also, on freelance basis may following: stage fighting coach, music coach, singing coach, dialect , accent coach, movement , dance coach, special effects advisor (for example magician might used invent on-stage tricks, such in phantom of opera).
