A boy with a mass of 50 kg jumps off a 30 kg boat, causing the boat to move to the right at 2 m/sec. The boy j?

again conservation of momentum:

momentum = p = mv = mass * velocity.

boy on boat, , boat @ rest (we have assume this, should have been mentioned in question!). boat being @ rest means boy , boat had 0 momentum start off with!

momentum boat gains + momentum of boy jumps off should sum become 0 well, otherwise momentum not conserved!

momentum of boat:

p(boat) = 30 * 2 = 60

momentum of boy:

p(boy) = 50 * v(boy)

p(boy) + p(boat) = 0

50 * v(boy) + 60 = 0

v(boy) = -60/50 = -6/5 = -1.2 m/sec

instead of saying minus 1.2 1.2 m/sec left!

anyway, i'd got alternative a!

cheers!

a boy mass of 50 kg jumps off 30 kg boat, causing boat move right @ 2 m/sec. boy jumped velocity of ____.

a. -1.2 m/sec
b. 3.3 m/sec
c. 1.1 m/sec
d. 0.2 m/sec
