What is aircraft flutter? How does it occur?

flutter not confused resonance.

occurs when aerodynamic phenomena interact structural properties of aircraft wing / tail / control surface etc; , generate self-exciting , self sustaining motion. may in form of bending, twisting or combination of two.

structures have "natural vibration modes", depending on composition, stiffness , mass distribution - , display rapid periodic motion if excited @ particular frequency. if aerodynamic loading @ time coincident natural vibration mode, structure vibrate. in severe cases, vibrating structure in turn increase aerodynamic load - subsequently increases amplitude of vibration. self sustaining mechanism, , if structural damping insufficient (in terms of bending, torsion - or both!) structure may fail.

naturally potentially destructive phenomenon may occur gradually on time, or arise little warning. energy can dissipated reducing airpeed, reducing aerodynamic loading , removing so-called "feedback loop" sustains flutter.

not phenomenon limited aerospace applications - applies structural, buildings, bridges, etc. research tacoma bridge example.

please explain in detail , in simple words how , why flutter occurs? energy extracted airstream , energy dissipated? please help... need urgently.
