How do I appreciate poetry?

can bright guy sometimes, , can understand "difficult" subject matter, life of me don't "get" poetry. seem seem lack aesthetic taste of friends gifted with. when (try to) read poetry eyes sort of glaze on , don't know i'm doing. how cultivate sense of poetry?

in particular, goes through mind when read poetry? reading it, keeping sort of rhythm in mind? read slowly, , try visualize it? think it, or intuit it, , sort of let wash on you? thought process?? how can better @ understanding poetry??
