The IRS has started sending me letters for my estranged wife's large tax debt.?

haven't spoken wife in 5 years, , irs has started pursuing me $33,000 tax debt. there can since have been filing separately 5 years? there no way can pay this, , don't feel should have to. don't want have on credit, , don't want tax liens against me, or have tax return taken payment. can information debt, or make me responsible? irs have process kind of situation? if has information, please help.
