Should my husband leave the keys to our new boat in the ignition, when it is parked sitting on its trailer?
time keys of boat should left ignition when taken marine service shop maintenance or mechanical repairs.
otherwise, leaving boat or pwc key(s) in vessel bad habit. boater education emphasizes remove keys boat when operator of vessel departs off it.
following reasons why should not leave keys in boat.
#1. theft. unless put on anti-theft trailer coupler lock prevents tampering, there strong possibility of theft. simple locks easy cut , steal boat. if leave key inside boat, made ton easier theft if has transponder chip.
#2. boat damage. if wanted or vandalize property of yours without being obvious, can run boat out of water without water pumped cooling system. run boat out of water long enough (longer 1 minute without water in cooling system), can cost $500 or more in repairs fix.
#3. safety , liability of injury or death others. never leave keys in car out of direct reach , sight, 5 year old 14 year old in vehicle , operate it. happens more think.
same applies boat, though can't move on land if secured, can catch on fire , explode if overheats long. propeller nasty piece of work too, can maim , kill.
so, if else's child access boat , run engine , if catches on fire or prop injures someone, held liable if sued.
therefore, please closely listen importance of removing keys when operator of vessel not onboard. hope can explain , reason husband on importance of this.
i asked him keys boat. "they're in ignition"
