British empire questions please help!!?
1. around late 19th century , 20th century, there craze expansionism , imperialism. each "developed" country wanted annex "third world country"
a) gain more power
b) exploit fruits , resources of country without having pay in return
c) have more manpower
d) extend range of influence far possible.
reason, british eyed india, country full of amazing land , natural resources , great riches (remember, seeking glory of india columbus discovered america).
2. british approached ruler merchants, foreign traders establish posts in india. harmless enough, right? once had little businesses, came nawabs, governors of states in india, , offered them money in return control on import/export, or in return type of resource state gave. little little, nawabs reduced sitting in palaces, enjoying money came in effortlessly, , british controlled more , more. meanwhile, bringing in british people - families, friends, more businessmen...the small company became powerful british trade company - british east india company (beic because whole thing long). company formed establish trade between east indies , britain, because successful, granted special rights , given monopolies uk govt. made them more powerful.
beic started calling on soldiers britain. attacked 1 province. nawab did nothing defend because was, after all, bribed british , living happy life in palace. 1 after another, provinces fell british. when mughal emperor bahadur shah zafar heard of in delhi, ordered british out of india. began war between emperor's army , british.
know, british won. 1 morning, after prayer in moti masjid (if have been lal qila in delhi, you'll see this. should go someday. marvelous, place), bahadur shah zafar called daughters , said, "it has been shown me coming. going fall." daughters escaped when british did come, although sons, toddlers oldest young man, beheaded, , heads presented emperor on plate. if remember, delhi capital of india. once taken, british in full power. exiled emperor burma , there died in exile. british had india.
3. life ultimate ruler, king, miserable. life ruled, indian people, not either. looked down upon because mere 'natives', , british people there favored. indians heavily taxed, buy british products, while same products grown in india exported (it cheaper british - pound more rupee. 1 of these products salt...hence ghandi's famous salt march). indian students in schools ordered separate, because got grades , no silly native have done without cheating. of course, indians did business british , tried become british (forcing daughters wear dresses, praising queen victoria, etc.) happy. not commonfolk. same thing did native americans. lived on land, took food, , ordered them scram.
