How does a book get published?

traditional publishing:

authors send query letters literary agents (much cover letter, describing novel).

if query letter/novel/writing interests agent , thinks can sell it, agrees represent author.

agent submits novel various publishers.

if novel interests publisher , thinks can sell it, agrees publish it. contract signed between author , publisher.

novel goes through various stages of editing/prepping sale/marketing. author expected contribute--do self-promotion, network, requested revisions, etc.

publisher negotiates bookseller (representative of book stores) on how many copies bought , put on shelves.

book published , sold via online sites amazon , brick-and-mortar stores.

self publishing:

author finds self-publisher print copies of book. author pays copies of published book herself.

author work publisher does: editing, cover art, marketing, , finding places sell book.

author sells book himself @ events, online, etc.
