2002 Pontiac Grand Am Overheating?

our 2002 pontiac grand overheating , blowing cold air when turn on heater. know not coolant low. turn on air conditioning , fans work. can drive our car when air conditioning on otherwise engine gets hot in idle. have had problems coolant before, did not act this. checked fuse box fuses except rr defog. engine coolant temperature sensor? if how test without taking in? thoughts appreciated.
