What materials could I use to make a skeletal sculpture?

in sculpture class professor wants make our own fantasy creature's skeleton.
problem first time experimenting idea , he's not sure materials use. thinking using wire , cloth covered in plaster, it's how piece parts wire?
don't know if that'll work. so, if has new bright ideas on kind of materials use. please write back. it'll big help.
