Could large non-turbine aircraft be much more fuel efficient than current jet / turboprop transports?

understand there lot of consumer resistance, , practical factors ( lower speed being 1 ) might prevent it, curious how fuel saved designed non-turbine transport aircraft?

efficency tradeoffs payload, speed, size limits, maintenance ?
