Why are some movies only in select theaters?

there several reason happens.

1. studio trying build word of mouth/buzz before nation wide release. happens movies expected contend awards.

2. studio doesn't know if movie draw large audience, roll out select theatres way gage interest without spending lot of money. keep in mind studio has front $1500-$2000 each film print make - in smaller towns, many movies struggle make kind of money in entire run.

3. movie being release small studio , need generate revenue pay additional prints and/or marketing.

how movies chosen in select theaters while others in theaters.
