Why is my ASR / ESP malfunctioning on my 2003 Volkswagen Jetta?

have 2003 volkswagen jetta gl 1.8lt. has ~116k miles , has developed serious issue. @ seemingly random moments, asr/esp warning light come on (a triangle circle around , exclamation point in middle). when happens, car jerks hard whenever transmission shifts up. when hard, mean feels though transmission rip car. need repair remedy issue?
