What does hull mean when you are descibing a boat isv it widthor lenghth?
great question... know, can confusing...
"hull" not descriptive of either length or width of boat...
hull of boat "the floaty part"... or bottom (mostly in water) part of boat.
boaters typically describe boat having: "vee" hull, "flat" hull, or "multi-hull" etc.
length of boat expressed length... 2 common terms used are; "loa" meaning "length on all" or "lwl" meaning "length of boat's water line.
lwl - tell how long hull is... @ water level.
loa - tell how long boat is... many boats have "bow pulpits" (remember scene in titanic?) front of boat extends way forward on front of hull.
width of boat expressed in terms of width or "beam". "beam of boat typically widest point of boat's hull... , typically widest part of boat nothing peoples arms , legs stick out beyond that.
so, quick visual example, check out link below... , question!
happy & safe boating,
john
ps. if want impress sailor wants buy boat -
let him know boat's "lwl" (length @ water line) more important the boat's "loa" (length on all).
why?
because lwl tell how "useable" space in boat... (so, boat 26 foot lwl have more useable space inside, boat has "loa" of 28 feet. because boat mfg knows boat buyers impressed boat's loa. therefore, add 3 foot long bow pupit flag holder, , 3 foot long swim platform on rear (or stern)... have turned 26 foot boat 32 foot boat... , 32 foot boat price.
what hull (meters) mean when describing boat im not sure weather's length or width of boat
