Why do we tag people when we see a Volkswagen Bug?

tag them? wave. , wave back. vw got name "beetle or bug" when first entered country. meant put down term or derogatory term german made car; after war , english longshoremen gave car "nick name".
nickname stuck endearing owners had bought them. recognized "type 1" factory , registration. term "beetle" did not officially surface until 1973 superbeetle(the 1 curved windshield , struts) along side production of regular "type 1" 2 dr sedan.
english confident had north american market imported cars. mgb's, triumphs, vauxalls, austin, morris, morris minor, standard, ford prefect, jaguar, sunbeam, rileys, ford zephyr, hillman , rolls royce; plus french had renault, citroen , peugeots,italy -fiat. know have missed few.
