Is editing photos a big part of photography?

absolutely is.

people think editing cheating -- changing camera captured. these people don't understand camera has algorithms inside make guesses @ seeing. cited example "white balance" -- camera guesses photo "18% grey", , adjusts colour of white accordingly. camera not right. have ability correct mistakes if after accurate, documentary shot.

issue camera's limited dynamic range, means shot has both dark , light areas, can detail in 1 or other not both. camera inherently limited in recording detail, , photographer free edit photo bring such detail in. technique of "high dynamic range" photography allows 1 blend multiple pictures of different exposures in order find single image more accurately represents saw.

i know lot of people edit photos, how editing goes photography? or pictures come out perfect?
