you've got take tide or current speed account , direction.in vessels under sail power neeed understand boat's leeway - effect of wind on sails blowing boat sideways , being offset boat's keel.you add these right sines/cosines etc , ground speed.if draw diagram main line of length boats speed on water in direction ant travel , , add 2 lines @ end length speed of current , direction , , line on end of 2nd line length speed of leeway , direction @ right angles first(main) line;then draw line start of main line last 2nd line endpoint , gives length(speed) on ground , , direction. need try see it.this @ sea.

if given v of boat compared water how compare ground?
