How do you trace your genealogy?

i'm mixpot of different cultures don't know ones precisely. people can never tell race am: either think i'm portuguese, caucasian, spanish or mixture of three. know have caucasian blood because father's mother half-white, i'm not sure else. parents no use, barely know past grandparents, , i'm classified 'coloured' in home country (which divided black, white, asian , coloured, coloured being mixed race). know people trace genealogies time, i'm not sure how. there someplace go to?
