How many miles can a 1998 Toyota Celica go before it starts to have real issues?

16 years old , have found great car private seller. 1989 toyota celica gt convertible. test drove , love it. asking $3800 car , want buy now. mom wants buy worried mileage on right now. has approximately 171000 miles on , dad says shouldn't bother because start having issues. wondering if should buy because still has 50000 miles left in or if should let go because die.
