Why do tectonic earthquakes occur? Please answer the other part too!?
stress builds @ plate boundaries because @ these boundaries 2 (or more) plates interact each other. can sliding past each other (transform boundary), pulling away each other (divergent), or colliding (convergent). plates rubbing against each other experience friction, not flat smooth surfaces. pretend have 2 pieces of sand paper, 1 on top of other, rough sides facing each other. put them between hands , try slide them on top of each other. can feel resistance? doesn't want move, given enough force, break , move. breaking, when sheer force becomes greater frictional or normal force, causes earthquake, release of energy.
why tectonic earthquakes occur?
in other words, causes stress build along plate boundaries?
