Buying my first road bike?

hello,
5'7" 120 lbs lean build. wondering kind of road bike best me. want 1 commute not competitions or anything. nothing serious, under 400 bucks nice i'm willing go little higher. also, wondering such bike. know it's long shot but; walmart? there bike shop near me go there, wanted know if walmart sold same kind of thing. oh , want brakes lol! heard kinds of road bikes (fixies think) don't have brakes. thanks!
