What made 80s photography so cool?

hello fellow photographers,
obsessed photographic in 80s, photography movies, movies. way grain looked in advertising in magazines. how john hughes films , other greats looked .. uhh can't describe it. there these wonderful cold backgrounds saturated colors accenting them.
anyways, wondering if here working @ time photographer , tell me if types of films or processing used on purpose style, or technology available @ time. types of cameras, iso of films, , printing.
if don't know, think best way find stuff out? should contact cinematographers? kodak? magazines?
