Why are there so little people involved in business or in business ownership? (yes even in the United States)?

in united states highly popular our business ideology of called free market. when comes talking people wanting work living , depend on employer pay them (what employer believes deserved). why there little businesses in comparison workers? in america talking business enterprise if compare numbers on pay roll numbers of people receiving wage based on success of there business why there little of them? (again in comparison)
why not more malls being built , more stores (and competition) being created.
