Which method do you choose or like most when doing art?

when plan/do a painting, craft, whatever visual art...

1.- before make art plan out do, how it, maybe analyze materials , when you're ready , confident start art

2.- grab piece of paper, clay, etc. , let imagination flow , add stuff ideas

please tell me more of method or if have 1 not show here
