Poetry!! "Suicide in the trenches" help?!!?

it's pretty interesting , simple. teacher's given exercise. first stanza:

knew simple soldier boy
grinned @ life in empty joy,
slept soundly through lonesome dark,
, whistled lark.

-- "empty joy" leaps out. boy joyful? whistling lark , sleeping in lonesome can go million ways; kid dead, or genuinely "simple" , taking pleasure in life, no complications.

second stanza:

in winter trenches, cowed , glum,
crumps , lice , lack of rum,
put bullet through brain.
no 1 spoke of him again.

-- poet pretty gives answer questions raised in first stanza. job: what's significance of "crumps" , "lice" , "lack of rum?" war's fault?

third stanza:

smug-faced crowds kindling eye
cheer when soldier lads march by,
sneak home , pray you'll never know
hell youth , laughter go.

-- enormous ambiguities abound. crowds? can linked our suicidal boy? anti-war poem, or attitude people have?
