How do I know who I am actually related to when doing my genealogy?

hear people finding out sorts of cool things family history. if flying solo on (no family help), how know if related 1 say...in 1800s. know because has same last name doesn't mean they're related, right? there many websites go through lot of them cost money. i'd rather able free.
