is/ more of artistic movement, being connected new, radical plays (like edward albee). original theatres located on street intersecting broadway , theatre buildings between 90-500 seats. ob meant theatre couldn't within main area of broadway box (main broadway) later term referred 'league' of theatres, writers etc.
