Struggling to print from DOS to a USB printer...?

i've got hp laserjet p1005 , trying print dos program printer running windowsxp. in small business setting.

know normal trick of "sharing" printer , going through net use lpt1: //compname/printer \persistent:yes
, have done that. says successful when comes time print, document sits in printer , acts it's printing when isn't. changed settings on printer "text" , gave trick try didn't work either.

can please help?! , while know decent amount computers , printers, if can quite literally go step step wonderful.
