asuka period: gardens expressed buddhism , taoism visions imitating famous mountains of chinese origin such penglaishan, created.
archaeological research has found ruins of gardens in fujiwara , heijyo castle towns. within heijyo castle town remains of water passage seemingly used @ “water poetry ceremonies”.
osawa pond @ daitokuji temple in saga (sakyo, kyoto) considered created artificial pond @ detached palace emperor saga. precious remains of gardens in beginning of heian period.
style of aristocratic mansions in heian period called “shinden-zukuri” style. in style, garden created in front of palace (the south), , water flowed artificial water passage pond islands in garden. water poetry ceremonies held there. although kind of aristocratic garden style in heian period described in “the tale of genji”, there few remaining examples of garden show style of days.
in late heian period, sakuteiki written. first book discusses techniques allotment of land, stone arrangement, artificial waterfall, water passage , planting. because of influence of pure land buddhism, pure-land-style gardens, imitated paradise in western pureland, became popular in time. main architectural style has shifted shinden style amitabha hall style time.

many great gardens created between kamakura period , muromachi period, not because garden-making technique had improved in accordance rise of zen , development of syoin-zukuri style, because successive shoguns liked making gardens. in period, great garden makers such soseki muso produced. dry landscape style, technique water currency expressed stone arrangement without using water ponds or creeks, had spread in period.

since muromachi period, japanese tea ceremony has flourished. sen no rikyu established style of tea house, , had roji or “dewy path” leading them. examples of style include taian roji (oyamazaki, otokuni, kyoto) , kankyuan roji (kyoto).
in beginning of edo period, when shoguns , daimyos built castles , mansions, created many excursion-style gardens, in people walk around garden. 1 of famous garden makers in period enshu kobori. excursion-style gardens have pond or artificial hill @ centre, seen in daimyo’s mansions, called chisen excursion-style gardens. examples of style include koishikawa korakuen (tokyo), kenrokuen (kanazawa), korakuen (okayama), ritsurin park (takamatsu), suizenji park (kumamoto).
famous gardens created after meiji period possessed businesspeople , politicians. of gardens created iwasaki family of mitsubishi finance group open public public parks in tokyo. aritomo yamagata known park lover, , left parks such murinan (kyoto) , chinzanso (tokyo) posterity. garden designer, seventh-generation jihe ogawa, known ueji, famous in period. in addition, mirei shigemori created innovative dry-landscape-style gardens
