Why do people from the United States think taxes are so horrible?

can't bad when don't have pay directly things health care , education. before 1850s taxes paid university fees , education free. gov't though couldn't fund anymore stopped.

think it's because of emphasis on tax in history textbooks? i've read 2~4 history textbooks during lifetime far , in pre-colonial period emphasize on unfairness of taxes.
