A boat travels 320 miles downstream and back. the trip downstream took 8 hours. the trip back took 16 hours. ?

speed of current=y

since know boat going downstream @ beginning, know moving @ x+y. (like moving on escalator, may walk @ same pace guy on stairs, movement of escalators gets quicker)
know speed downstream 320 miles/8 hours. or 40 m/h
similarly, know when going against current boat travels @ x-y
furthermore, speed against= 320m/16h or 20m/h
create system of equations...
x+y=40
x-y=20.
solving, x=40-y; 40-2y=20; y=10
subbing y x=40-10; x=30

find speed of boat in still water , speed of current !

answer boat = 30mph , current =10mph
