depends on light source coming from. when shading picture, choose specific direction source of light coming from, , shading should fall place. if need help, can study pictures reference on shading, depending on you're drawing. image search based on drawing, , should come up. remember- there few absolutes in drawing.

in drawing 1 should darker 1 "nearer" or 1 "further?"
