What should I use to smooth out my plaster bandage sculpture?

made sculpture out of plaster bandages intention of sanding down afterward. little did know virtually impossible without ruining surface because of gauze. don't want start over- don't rough sculpture has now. there kind of clay/plaster material can add on top of of current sculpture in order smooth out? preferably, i'd able sand final product- other method fine well.
