My house was painted but not primed first, now the paint is coming off, do i need to strip paint then prime?
essentially, there 2 kinds of house paint: oil (also called alkyd because of alcohols , acids used make synthetic oil) , so-called latex. critical difference between oil , latex paints not cure in same way. oil paint never stops curing. ages, continues oxidize, becoming more , more brittle. latex cures in 2 weeks , stays pliable. oil paint adheres better problem surfaces because oils small enough seep wood or microscopic openings in old, chalky paint. resins in latex paint big seep anything. lessons here latex outperforms oil , expensive all-acrylic latex works better less expensive latex vinyl acrylics. never use latex on multiple coats of oil paint.
peeling can occur in high humidity. if wood under paint soaked in moisture. if rains shortly after painting. if wrong paint put on existing paint. if paint went on thick. if surface not cleaned properly.
