however, there complication meaning of "wushu" today due recent history. in 1950's, communist under mao tse-dong outlawed teaching , practice of martial art (wushu). had modified ban because wushu has existed long in chinese culture, every form of physical exercises , training used common people wushu in form. modified ban allow physical conditioning not teaching of martial or self-defense aspect of wushu. "wushu" in sense means non-martial training such used chinese acrobats. opening of shaolin temple , relaxation of ban on martial art, today word "wushu" mean non-martial art of chinese acrobats or real full blown martial art practised shaolin monks.
outside of communist china, word "wushu" , still used more traditional schools, since westerners started using word "kungfu" mean chinese martial art, has become more common use mean chinese martial art includes combat/self-defense training.
