1999-2005 Volkswagen GTI?

hello everyone!
i've been doing weeks of research, , can't seem make decision.
i've read every article , every forum out there , i'm finding lot of owner biased information.

im looking buy 1999-2005 vw gti years have appealing body style.
now, argument between 1.8l turbo vs throaty 2.8l vr6

now, according should buy @ least 2003 or newer because stock engine upgrades gave each engine 30hp.

in year 2003 vr6 bringing 200hp 1.8t bringing 180hp
1.8t gets 0-60 whopping 0.2 seconds faster heavy vr6.

now, understand there several makes , models of vr6, have 16v , others have 32. i'm not going spend on $1,000 on engine mods. might cold air intake , maybe chip/exhaust.

need know...
in range of 1999-2005 year best speed/power.
pros , cons both engines.
year/model/make of vr6 had twice valves.
