Legitimate Photography Contest?

of legitimate photography contests find cost money. , reason, above user said. cheap contests offer cheap prizes , keep rights photos receive. it's not worth it.

local contests. looking theme. instance, local hospital wanted hold auction breast cancer. theme had "go red women".

local dance studio wanted hold fundraiser auction theme of "movement", not body movement. made deal half of profits. made $240, means work sold $480! ten or prints, different sizes, , cost me $16 print. (i've got connections.)

i've made finalist in photographer's forum student contest of 2008 (top 8% of entries). i've entered again 2009 results won't in until january. contest closed year. happens every year , it's $3.95 per entry, or $4.95 late entry. top 2 prizes cash , camera. other placing prizes different amounts of cash. finalists don't place official certificate.

pdn holds several contests regularly, very, competitive. professionals, images need top notch. can view recent entries before enter. entries more expensive, $25 per entry. or $10 students, still competing professionals.

careful of contests "congratulations, photo published in book along other winners! can buy special discounted price of $50! after date increase $70! , certificate $30 more! or plaque $45!" .... price, can make own book full of images. www.blurb.com (just ordered own today! graduation present!)

read fine print. make sure says photographer retains rights photos. otherwise, have given entire photo contest providers, , technically, if repost anywhere, can sue because have given them rights. also, if don't want them reuse photo without permission, read fine print. contests held company can new pool of images. although retain right photos, agree have right use photo in ads, etc without notifying you. if don't win. that's not bad thing, long provide credit. it's great exposure. , can imaging picking magazine @ barnes , nobel , seeing image in ad. =p
