What makes a good photographer?

seems every artistic photo ever see of wave, sunset, shadow or building (in way can't tell building) or corner of flower. bonus points given being in 'black , white'. what's worse, don't understand why better ones take.

missing something? hear talk of framing, composition, lighting etc, seems common sense - keep making changes until looks good. guess best way can think ask this: if asked me , famous photographer take photo of same sculpture, how tell 1 mine?

ask because i'm trying supportive of aspiring photographer friend, difficult me take him seriously. seems in rest of world, there huge difference in work between pros , schmos. can explain difference in photography?
