Why such variance on cost of additional taxes and fees added to airline ticket prices?

flying beijing next year. used popular site finding prices. wonder why direct nonstop flight san francisco beijing has $300 additional fees, while 1 stops in los angeles , seoul (3 total landings, 2 different airlines, additional baggage handling efforts) has $97 taxes , fees. logic of escapes me, unless san francisco based airline has found way milk consumers.
