What are some good poetry books for a 6th-12th grade classroom?
in building classroom library , working on several unit plans, requiring myself obtain @ least 30 (yep, thirty) different poetry books students.
of them no-brainers, no-brainers can become tough find right copies of.
example, of course have book of shakespeare's sonnets, , should have maya angelou, edgar allan poe, stephen crane, , on. but, mind you, these books going middle/high school classroom; they'll battered , stolen, , don't want replacing handful of $20 books every other week (even if can else pay it). so:
poetry books appropriate 6th-12th-grade classroom?
things consider:
- language: while occasional curse word among couple hundred poems acceptable, can't take responsibility exposing kids rampant profanity (as might there more leniency toward this, it's out of hands). same goes overtly-sexual , drug-related themes (in other words, no ginsberg books know of).
- accessibility: while poets shakespeare considered "must-have" and/or can explained students, poets, i'm certain, going greek students. can't hand them copy of original "beowulf", or something.
- length: occasional long poem fine; i'm not shutting down poe collection because "the raven" long poem, i'm not going have them read "howl", either (well, 1 many reasons). i'd keep poems under 2 pages, part, though i'd welcome students take challenge of reading longer poems if desire, i'd them able open page in these books , find poem can read aloud class.
- cost: said, these books going in middle/high school classroom. they'll inevitably damaged , stolen, , i'd not replacing expensive/rare/otherwise valuable books; they're books, if they're students.
- relevance: barring "no-brainers" mentioned above, i'd keep poems relevant in @ least 1 of these ways: 'classic' or famous poets (from whitman connolly), familiar names (like tupac shakur, although - correct me if i'm wrong - unfortunately can't imagine book being entirely 'clean')
please, suggest books me. lists of books, if must. amazon/half.com/whatever links appreciated, if you're recommending particular copy of book (say, of shakespeare's sonnets). lists of poets works appropriate, if nothing else, helpful.
in advance.
