What is an "advertising tie-up?"?
oh my, oh my...i wrote wrote entire paper on subject international marketing class finished!
first of all, "tie-ups" , "tie-ins" same thing, although "tie-up" older term. more recent term came use in 1980's, "product placement," synonymous. 3 terms denote "...a cooperative venture between media maker , manufacturer." (newell, salmon, & chang, 2006)
example, remember in film "e.t.", when elliott lures e.t reese's pieces? hershey company, makes reese's, had arranged director steven spielberg use candy in film. sales of candy tripled shortly thereafter. famous example of tie-ups/tie-ins/product placement.
used think examples of tie-ups/tie-ins/product placement involved manufacture paying director surreptitiously promote product--"you have scene in movie depicting actor eating candy-bar, , i'll pay million dollars." while sort of tie-up exist, it's more recent , less common thought.
example, in "e.t.", spielberg received no money including reese's pieces in film. in exchange placing reese's in film, hershey's paid million dollars of advertising promoted both "e.t." , reese's. reece's , "e.t." "tied" together; hence terms "tie-up" , "tie-in."
, in tom hanks film, "castaway," director robert zemeckis says didn't receive dime promoting fedex within film (though admits accepted payment placement in of previous movies). however, fedex donated enormous amount of logistical support, use of uniforms , airplanes, etc., , fedex ceo investor in studio produced "castaway." wilson sports received no money use of "wilson volleyball," although company donated sixty volleyballs producers of "castaway."
point is, according article newell, salmon, & chang, cite in "source" section, tie-ups/tie-ins/product placement has historically not been money changing hands. instead, it's barter. movie uses product on screen, , company buys ads both movie , product.
or maybe product doesn't appear @ in movie, still advertise movie , product (e.g. burger king example poster before me mentioned).
or maybe company loans 1 of products prop movie. don't pay me use prop, , don't pay either. (this common arrangement in days of film-making, before 1920's or so).
or maybe arrange have 1 of actors promote product off-screen (which may why it's mentioned in acting contracts mentioned).
of above arrangements "tie" movies (or shows, or games or books) together, , it's lucrative industry. according marketing textbook, tie-ups/tie-ins/product placement industry hit $4.25 billion in 2005, , forecast hit $10 billion year.
money @ stake, director needs know or actors "on board" , willing participate in tie-ins necessary. that's guess why it's mentioned in acting contracts.
if have further questions, email me @ kontra_mundum @ yahoo.com
