How do you measure the speed of a boat?

not using gsp or whatever, mean...well i've tried use formula d/t = s (distance on time equals speed) i've read it's distance of boat (like boat's length , not water). i'm trying measure boat's speed different distances of water (ex. 5 feet, 6 feet, etc.)
