How do you get COOL friends during first year of university even if you're commuting?

i'm going uoft fall , need advice on guarantee i'll cool friends rest of year, people can go parties on thursday/friday nights etc. don't want have friends "hi" once in while in between classes , don't together. have commute year sadly cause can't afford residence, i'm planning save res next year.

advice veterans? how can guarantee next 4 years of life won't miserable one?
