"digital scanner" listens analog audio multiplexed group of channels called "trunk". trunk can number of channels, , switch routes radio traffic next open channel.

if local police use trunked system, without digital receiver, need scan channels follow conversation. if have digital scanner, scanner listens control channel , scanner follows conversation.

if buying new scanner, idea buy 1 works trunked communications systems.
