What is Intermedia and Fluxus?

fluxus (latin "to flow") or intermedia concept has been used describe hybrid blending of different forms of media, such music, poetry, art, sculpture, film , paintings create work of higher significance , performer involvement. result of hybridised combinations of genres , media result in artworks cannot defined specific medium or discipline category. genres have blended each other , on time branched off new area have had own names created because of different media blending becoming specific. areas such performance art, visual poetry, visual music or conceptual art have appeared in world result of intermedia.

international avant-garde group of artists founded in germany u.s. artist george maciunas (1931 – 78) in 1962. members, including joseph beuys, john cage, , yves klein, explored media ranging performance art poetry experimental music. opposed tradition , professionalism in arts, fluxus group shifted emphasis artist makes artist's personality, actions, , opinions. throughout 1960s , '70s staged "action" events, engaged in politics , public speaking, , produced sculptural works featuring unconventional materials. though influential movement in europe, group's work conflicted authority , aroused controversy.

international network of artists, composers , designers noted blending different artistic media , disciplines in 1960s active in visual art , music literature, urban planning, architecture, , design. fluxus described intermedia, term coined fluxus artist dick higgins in famous 1966 essay.

origins of fluxus lie in many of concepts explored composer john cage in experimental music of 1950s. cage explored notions of indeterminacy in art, through works such 4' 33", influenced lithuanian-born artist george maciunas. maciunas (1931–1978) organized first fluxus event in 1961 @ ag gallery in new york city , first fluxus festivals in europe in 1962.

fluxus similar in spirit earlier art movement of dada, emphasizing concept of anti-art , taking jabs @ seriousness of modern art. fluxus artists used minimal performances highlight perceived connections between everyday objects , art, duchamp in pieces such fountain. fluxus art presented in "events", fluxus member george brecht defined "the smallest unit of situation". events consisted of minimal instruction, opening events accidents , other unintended effects. contributing randomness of events integration of audience members performances, realizing duchamp's notion of viewer completing art work.
