nathan, there no standard meaning can carried 1 poem another, me meaning seems clear enough here. child 'turning ten' becoming aware of changing, of growing up, of inevitability of losing childhood behind. process of incipient maturation being pictured, in tongue-in-cheek fashion, sort of illness through passes without dying, yet changes him. soul, thing makes him child, of freedom implies, being 'disfigured.' illnesses of mind , spirit, yet none lethal. meaning seems clear enough...
