additionally, usgen web free online resource @ http://www.usgenweb.org/ . site packed how-to tips, queries , records every state , counties within states. then, there rootsweb @ http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ free site hosted ancestry.com can search surnames, post queries on message boards , subscribe surname mailing lists.

also, sure check each state need information many have own projects, example, state of missouri has great website has many free source documents online @ http://www.sos.mo.gov/mdh/ , south carolina has many free wills , other court documents @ http://www.archivesindex.sc.gov/onlinearchives/search.aspx
