When doing genealogy research what do you do when you come up with two conflicting documents?

regarding someones birth place? have found new document 1850 census lists 1 of great, great, great, etc. being born 1767 in ireland. however, have other information says born in 1767 on march 11 in hardy, bedford, va. on 1850 census shows, residence district 23 (city), hardy (county), virginia. wondering how 1 figure out correct? have gotten residence mixed birth place since same (i'm assuming district 23 bedford)?

i've gotten of information off ancestry.com. really, @ genealogy have ideas, thoughts, etc?
