What is wrong with my 2000 Volkswagen Golf 2.0?

hello. have 2000 volkswagen golf 2 door 2.0 engine. has been running ok, although little sluggish @ times, have been smelling burning smell every once in while. smells burning rubber. don't think clutch, because clutch feels ok. also, few weeks ago, checked oil, because think burns oil. 3000 mile mark when go change oil, there 2 out of 4 1/2 quarts put in left in engine. doesn't leak, assume burning it. when checked oil few weeks ago, there white stuff on dipstick in oil. cleaned it, , pulled out, , white stuff still there. please me. want know may wrong before take shop. has 106,000 miles.
