catastrophism: features on earth result of catastrophic events. large scale changes take place on short time scale.

uniformatarianism: features on earth shaped processes operating @ same rate on huge time scales , processes occurring same shaped similar features in past.

uniformatarianism deemed accurate (although catastrophic events can cause significant changes in short time period) because observe today. take commonly used example, don't see long meandering deep cut canyons grand canyon being formed rapid flooding can see catastrophically formed river chanel looks different.

contrast philosophies of catastrophism , uniformitarianism. major differences in how each philosophy addresses age of earth? finally, while neither philosophy should taken literally, philosophy has been deemed more accurate scientific community , why?
